Renovation & Extension to County Down Family Home

The Brief:

The client had purchased a detached split level 1930’s bungalow requiring extensive renovation and set within a large and mature landscaped site which included a wooded area and stream located to the south of the property. The existing layout was typical of the period /style of the house with separate individual rooms, and an inaccessible loft area from which there were extensive views to the coast. The brief was to create an open living dining / kitchen layout which would link visually, and provide access to, the extensive gardens and views of the countryside.

The Solution:

Extensive external and internal refurbishment of the existing building fabric included particular attention to the ridge detailing to overcome ridge height planning restrictions and maintain the view from the roadside to match the original size / proportion of the house.

A new staircase was installed / positioned centrally which links the ground level entrance with a new garden room at lower ground floor level and going up to a home office within the existing roof space.

Internally the walls between front living room and kitchen, and kitchen / dining, were removed linking the three spaces together to form an open plan space which opened onto a new high level platform / decking area, also accessible from a newly created Master Bedroom suite.

The finished result is a modern family home designed over 3 levels, linked to its extensive surrounding site, and countryside views beyond.
